Synopsis
The global market for Boron Nitride Coatings was estimated to be worth US$ 317 million in 2024 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 396 million by 2031 with a CAGR of 3.2% during the forecast period 2025-2031.
This report provides a comprehensive assessment of recent tariff adjustments and international strategic countermeasures on Boron Nitride Coatings cross-border industrial footprints, capital allocation patterns, regional economic interdependencies, and supply chain reconfigurations.
Boron nitride coating is a white, tasteless, and silty liquid. It is an inert, inorganic, high-temperature lubricating material. It does not bind or soak molten metal, therefore, it can be used to protect and melt the surfaces of aluminum, magnesium, zinc alloys and refractory or ceramic vessels that have direct contact with the molten slag, thus extending the service life of such vessels. Boron nitride coatings are usually composed of boron nitride, water and a small number of other additives, and can be completely soluble in water. As a result of this property, boron nitride coatings are widely used in aluminum, magnesium, zinc alloy casting, gravity low-pressure casting, forging, powder metallurgy, and other fields. It is usually painted on the surface of the flow trough, casting table lining, distribution flow trough, filter box, transfer plate, skimmer, casting nozzle material, pouring ladle, etc. This will protect the mold from corrosion and thus extend the service life of the refractory, but also in the production process, to prevent fine impurities from penetrating into the liquid metal, resulting in secondary pollution, and thus greatly improve product quality. And boron nitride coating technology in the high-temperature environment also has excellent lubrication and oxidation resistance, non-stick, anti-jamming and metal or graphite corrosion oxidation and other properties. Moreover, it can be used not only to protect refractory but also to resist corrosion and sticking.
Boron nitride coating is a high-performance coating material with boron nitride (BN) as the core ingredient. It is divided into water-based coatings (global sales of US$307 million in 2023, expected to reach US$382 million in 2030, CAGR 3.2%) and solvent-based coatings. It is widely used in electrical insulation (such as semiconductor manufacturing, integrated circuit packaging), industrial lubricants, thermal spraying and aerospace. Its core advantages include high temperature stability (melting point of nearly 3000°C), excellent lubricity (dry lubrication coating can reduce the friction coefficient to 0.01-0.05), chemical inertness (acid and alkali corrosion resistance) and low dielectric constant (suitable for 5G base station high-frequency devices). The global market size in 2023 is about US$720 million (including water-based and solvent-based), and the Asia-Pacific region has the fastest growth rate (CAGR 4.8%), China, as the world's largest producer, will have a production capacity of 168,000 tons in 2025 (accounting for 29% of the world), and its global market share is expected to increase to 40% in 2030; major manufacturers include Saint-Gobain (market share 22%), Momentive (18%), ZYP Coatings and local companies such as Nitrogen Boron Technology (PBN series high-end products), with technology iterations focusing on nano-scale modification (particle size ≤50nm increases thermal conductivity by 30%), environmentally friendly water-based formula (VOC≤50g/L) and 3D printing adaptation processes. At the policy level, China's "14th Five-Year Plan" new materials plan lists hexagonal boron nitride as a strategic emerging industry, coupled with downstream drivers such as new energy vehicles (demand for lithium battery separators increases by 15% annually) and aerospace (rocket engine coating market exceeds US$500 million in 2030), it is expected that the global market size will exceed US$1.2 billion in 2030, of which the proportion of modified boron nitride coatings will increase from 35% in 2025 to 45%, but the high-end field still relies on international giants such as 3M and H.C. Starck.
