From a functional standpoint, NICs have historically been an essential board or chip in computing systems, enabling connectivity in networking systems. NICs, also known as network adapters, are used in computer systems, such as personal computers or servers, to establish a dedicated communication channel between the system and a data network. The NIC acts as a translator, taking host memory buffers and formatting them into structured packets for transmission over a network, usually Ethernet. The NIC also receives packets from the network and converts them into memory buffers for use by applications on the host.
A Smart NIC is a NIC with the addition of a programmable data processing unit (DPU) for network data acceleration and offload. The terms Smart NIC and DPU are often used interchangeably. Smart NICs add additional computing resources to the NIC to offload tasks from the host CPU, freeing the host CPU for more important tasks.
The global Smart NIC market was valued at US$ 691.4 million in 2023 and is anticipated to reach US$ 1562.7 million by 2030, witnessing a CAGR of 14.1% during the forecast period 2024-2030.
