Trypsin is an enzyme that aids with digestion. An enzyme is a protein that speeds up a certain biochemical reaction. Trypsin is found in the small intestine. It can also be made from fungus, plants, and bacteria. However, it is usually made for commercial purposes from the pancreas of livestock.

Trypsin is a serine protease found in the digestive system of many vertebrates where it hydrolyzes proteins. Through trypsinisation, it cleaves peptides at the carboxyl side of arginine and lysine, unless they are followed by a proline.

Trypsin has an optimal operating pH of about 7.5-8.5 and optimal operating temperature of about 37°C. Unlike chymotrypsin, the activity of trypsin is not affected by the inhibitor tosyl phenylalanyl chloromethyl ketone (TPCK).

The global Trypsin market was valued at US$ 219.1 million in 2023 and is anticipated to reach US$ 377.9 million by 2030, witnessing a CAGR of 8.0% during the forecast period 2024-2030.
