Synopsis
The global market for Polyglycolide was estimated to be worth US$ 130 million in 2024 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 1098 million by 2031 with a CAGR of 36.2% during the forecast period 2025-2031.
This report provides a comprehensive assessment of recent tariff adjustments and international strategic countermeasures on Polyglycolide cross-border industrial footprints, capital allocation patterns, regional economic interdependencies, and supply chain reconfigurations.
Polyglycolide (PGA), also known as polyglycolic acid, is a biodegradable, thermoplastic, linear aliphatic polyester synthesized through the ring-opening polymerization of glycolide or the polycondensation of glycolic acid. It is the simplest form of aliphatic polyester and is characterized by high crystallinity, a melting point of approximately 225–230 °C, and excellent mechanical strength. PGA undergoes hydrolytic degradation into glycolic acid, which is further metabolized into carbon dioxide and water under physiological conditions within several months.
Due to its high tensile strength, thermal stability, biocompatibility, and controllable degradation rate, PGA is widely used in biomedical applications such as absorbable surgical sutures, tissue engineering scaffolds, drug delivery systems, biodegradable implants, and orthopedic devices. Beyond the medical sector, it is also being adopted in packaging (as compostable films and barrier layers), textiles, and the oil & gas industry, particularly in biodegradable downhole tools and plugs.
North America holds the largest share of the global PGA market. This is attributed to advanced healthcare infrastructure, high surgical volume, and extensive use of biodegradable tools in shale gas extraction. The U.S. leads in both consumption and innovation, and the region is expected to maintain strong growth.
Europe is a steadily growing market, with Germany, the UK, and France at the forefront. The region benefits from stringent environmental policies and growing demand for sustainable materials in medical and consumer packaging applications. Steady growth is expected as biopolymers gain regulatory and commercial support.
Asia-Pacific is the fastest-growing region, led by China, India, South Korea, and Japan. Rapid industrialization, expanding healthcare sectors, rising awareness of sustainable alternatives, and increasing investments in medical manufacturing are key drivers. The region is also a major production base for synthetic polymers, which supports PGA capacity expansion.
This report aims to provide a comprehensive presentation of the global market for Polyglycolide, focusing on the total sales volume, sales revenue, price, key companies market share and ranking, together with an analysis of Polyglycolide by region & country, by Type, and by Application.
