Synopsis
The global market for Solketal was estimated to be worth US$ 16.8 million in 2024 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 11.2 million by 2031 with a CAGR of -5.0% during the forecast period 2025-2031.
This report provides a comprehensive assessment of recent tariff adjustments and international strategic countermeasures on Solketal cross-border industrial footprints, capital allocation patterns, regional economic interdependencies, and supply chain reconfigurations.
Solketal (CAS 100-79-8) is a protected form of glycerol with an isopropylidene acetal group joining two neighboring hydroxyl groups. Solketal contains a chiral center on the center carbon of the glycerol backbone, and so can be purchased as either the racemate or as one of the two enantiomers. Solketal has been used extensively in the synthesis of mono-, di- and triglycerides by ester bond formation. The free hydroxyl groups of solketal can be esterified with a carboxylic acid to form the protected monoglyceride, where the isopropylene group can then be removed using an acid catalyst in aqueous or alcoholic medium. The unprotected diol can then be esterified further to form either the di- or triglyceride.
Demand-driven and emerging applications
Traditional sectors: The chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries remain the main sources of demand, but the growth rate has slowed down.
Emerging opportunities:
Electronic cigarettes and biomedicine: The expansion of the use of acetone glycol as a solvent or intermediate may become a growth breakthrough.
Environmental and health trends: Consumers' concern for product safety and sustainability is driving the demand for high-purity (>98%) products.
Price and cost pressures
Price fluctuations: In April 2025, the market price in China was 45,000 yuan/ton (purity 97%). It may face further pressure in the future due to supply-demand imbalance or changes in raw material costs.
Technical substitution risks: Technological breakthroughs in bio-based acetone glycol and other substitutes may impact the traditional market.
Challenges and opportunities coexist
Core pain points: Shrinking demand for traditional applications, intense market competition, and declining profit margins.
Transformation direction:
High value-added products: Develop high-purity (>98%) and customized products to meet the high-end demands of the pharmaceutical and electronic cigarette industries.
Regional layout: Increase penetration in potential markets such as the Middle East and Africa to balance the contraction of global demand.
