Virtual Hosting or Shared Web Hosting is a system where multiple websites share the same physical server (or a cloud server, called cloud virtual hosting) and use a Web Server (such as Apache, etc.) to support multiple websites. The server is pre-installed with a website building operating environment and database, and multiple websites hosted on the same server share the database, network bandwidth and storage. Each user has separate FTP permissions and can upload web page files to their own directory space. Users do not have the permission to log in to the server's backend operating system and can only use virtual hosting to build websites.

As a cost-effective web hosting solution, virtual hosting is still evolving and adapting to changes in market demand. It allows multiple users to share the resources of the same physical server, thereby reducing costs and improving resource utilization. In recent years, with the advancement of cloud computing technology, virtual hosting services have not only significantly improved in performance and stability, but have also gradually evolved to higher-level services such as VPS (virtual private servers) and cloud hosts to meet the needs of companies of different sizes. At the same time, intensified market competition has prompted suppliers to continuously improve service quality, provide more flexible, secure and easy-to-manage product options, and focus on data protection and privacy security to cope with increasingly stringent legal and regulatory requirements. Therefore, despite competition from emerging hosting forms such as cloud services, virtual hosting still maintains a high demand among small and medium-sized enterprises and personal websites due to its cost-effectiveness.Global key players of Virtual Hosting include GoDaddy, Alibaba Group, Amazon, Newfold Digital, WPEngine, Baidu, HUAWEI, etc. The top seven players hold a share over 27%.
