Direct metal deposition (DMD) is a metal 3D printing technology that prints parts by melting and fusing material as it is deposited. It is also called 3D laser cladding and directed light fabrication. Instead of manufacturing new parts, DMD is usually used for repairing and rebuilding damaged components. DMD is a group of 3D printing processes that adds material alongside the heat input simultaneously. The heat source can either be a laser, electron beam, or plasma arc. The material used is either metal powder or wire. Powders result in lower deposition efficiency than metal wires as only a part of the total powders are melted and bonded to the substrate.
