Electrodeionization (EDI) water filtration systems, also known as continuous electrodeionization (CEDI) systems, are advanced and highly efficient technology used for purifying water by removing ions and impurities. EDI systems are widely employed in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, electronics manufacturing, power generation, and the production of ultrapure water for laboratory and research purposes. These systems utilize a combination of ion-exchange resins and an electrical process to deionize water, producing high-purity, ultrapure water without the need for chemical regeneration.
EDI systems use ion-exchange resins, similar to those used in traditional ion-exchange processes, to remove ions from water. Positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions) are exchanged with hydrogen (H+) and hydroxyl (OH-) ions, respectively. During the electrochemical process, ions migrate through the stack and are continuously removed from the feedwater. Cations move towards the cathode (negatively charged electrode), and anions move towards the anode (positively charged electrode). As ions migrate through the stack, the water becomes progressively deionized, resulting in high-purity and ultrapure water output. Unlike traditional ion-exchange processes, EDI systems do not require chemical regeneration, which reduces the need for handling and disposal of chemicals and makes the process more environmentally friendly.
