LiDAR is a laser-based remote sensing technology that uses laser-based beams instead of radio electromagnetic waves to implement the traditional and straightforward radar concept. In advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), LiDAR plays a vital role.
For ADAS, the application of LiDAR is mainly reflected in the following aspects:
3D modeling of surrounding environment: LiDAR scans the surrounding environment with laser, obtains a large amount of point cloud data, and then generates an accurate digital 3D model. This model provides autonomous vehicles with detailed environmental information, helping the vehicles better understand and respond to complex road conditions.
High-precision positioning: Combined with the Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Inertial Navigation System (INS), LiDAR can achieve high-precision positioning. This is crucial for autonomous vehicles, especially in complex urban environments, where precise positioning can help vehicles more accurately identify road markings, traffic signals, and obstacles.
Obstacle detection and classification recognition: During the scanning process, LiDAR can identify obstacles, clarify their location in space, and classify them. For example, obstacles such as vehicles and pedestrians can be segmented into independent individuals, and obstacle classification and object tracking can be achieved through matching and tracking. This helps autonomous vehicles better avoid potential risks and ensure driving safety.
