Nitrogen Rejection Unit (NRU) separates and vents Nitrogen (N2) to the atmosphere, while returning recovered hydrocarbon streams to the main liquefaction process or routing to fuel.
A Nitrogen Rejection Unit (NRU) is a critical piece of infrastructure in natural gas processing. It is used to remove nitrogen from natural gas to meet pipeline specifications or to improve the heating value of the gas. Most pipeline standards require that natural gas contain less than 4% nitrogen. High-nitrogen natural gas is essentially stranded, as it cannot feasibly be transported through pipelines to market. If there is too much nitrogen present in a pipeline, there is a danger of vapor lock or poor combustion. Nitrogen is non-combustible and dilutes the heating value of natural gas, so its removal increases the quality and value of the gas.
