Due to rapid population growth, demand for phosphorus is expected to increase by 50% to 100% by 2050. However, excess phosphorus in water bodies leads to eutrophication of water bodies, and strict regulations have been implemented on phosphorus discharge from natural water bodies around the world. Although phosphorus removal technology from wastewater was developed earlier, there are still some problems, including large sludge volume, accumulation of phosphorus in sludge, and struvite scaling. Therefore, recovering phosphorus from sewage or sludge can not only solve the scaling problem, but also alleviate the shortage of phosphorus resources and realize a circular economy of resource recycling.
