A Spark Direct Reading Spectrometer is a scientific instrument used to measure the elemental composition of a sample. It utilizes a technique called spark spectroscopy to analyze the light spectrum emitted by sparks generated from the sample.

The spectrometer consists of an electrode system that creates a spark discharge when a high voltage is applied to the sample. As the discharge passes through the sample, it vaporizes and excites the atoms, causing them to emit light.

The emitted light is then captured and split by a prism or diffraction grating, which separates the different wavelengths of light. These wavelengths are representative of specific elements present in the sample.
