Synopsis
The global market for Star Sensor was estimated to be worth US$ 145 million in 2024 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ 860 million by 2031 with a CAGR of 28.4% during the forecast period 2025-2031.
The star sensor is an attitude measurement device that uses stars as a reference source. It is currently the most precise spacecraft attitude determination tool with the smallest error over time. It has the advantages of good autonomy, good passive star measurement concealment, strong anti-electromagnetic interference ability, high attitude and orientation accuracy, and errors do not accumulate over time. It is mainly used for attitude control and astronomical navigation of satellites and spacecrafts.
The star sensor is mainly divided into two parts: imaging system and image processing system in terms of working principle. The star sensor first uses an optical lens and an image sensor to image a star. After star point extraction and centroid positioning, the position and brightness information of the star point on the image sensor target surface is obtained. Then the star point corresponding to the star point in the star catalog is obtained through star map recognition. Finally, the three-axis attitude of the star sensor is obtained through attitude calculation based on the recognition results, providing attitude data for the carrier control system to realize the navigation of the carrier.
The current major global manufacturers of star sensors include BAE Systems (Ball Aerospace), Sodern, Rocket Lab, CASC 8th Academy 803 Research Institute and CASC 5th Academy 502 Research Institute. In 2024, the top three manufacturers will account for 70.62% of the global revenue market share.
From a regional perspective, the UK maintains its leading position in the European market, and it is expected that the important market position of the Asia-Pacific region will become more prominent in the next few years. From the perspective of product type and technology, small and mini models occupy an important position and are expected to account for more than 50% of global revenue in 2031. From the perspective of product market application, commercial use plays an important role, and it is expected that global revenue will account for 82.81% in 2031. Satellites have become a new area of competition and competition between major powers, and various countries have strategically supported the development of this industry. Commercial aerospace is shifting from traditional space exploration to broader commercial applications, which has brought broad development opportunities for star sensors. However, due to the particularity of the product, the development of star sensors will be affected by technology, geopolitics, etc.
